What could this be, aside from sciatica?

I am 30 weeks pregnant, and I have had pain in my lower right back for most of my pregnancy, and it is progressively getting worse. Every time I bring it up my Dr goes “its sciatica”… Yea that would be awesome minus the fact that it does not match up with any signs of sciatica, except for being a pain on one side. Earlier I laid flat on my back for a minute and could feel everything settling in, and the pain on my right felt HORRIBLE. It felt painful, and I could not get up! I had to drag myself up. And a few times I would “run” after my dog, just playing around and that whole leg would give out for a second. Any ideas? It doesnt sound to me like sciatica, it feels like my hip is out of alignment or something when I lay down. Like you know when you move your arm or leg and it feels like it needs to pop? Thats kind of how it feels…

The only thing that I would suggest is to maybe do some stretching, preferably Yoga based. This may “unlock” the muscle that obviously has a knot in it.

what excersise should i do with sciatica??? 10 points best answer!?

i was diagnosed with sciatica on monday,caused by a slightly slipped disc. and am seeing a phisio next monday. i would love to go swimming as the pain seems to have decreased but i dont know if thats safe or what stroke to do! i def dont want to make it worse, but i dont want to loose fitness. and also want to do abdominal excersises! dont know what to do!

Physio should teach you stretching exercises to strengthen abs and back muscles including arching your back like a cat while on all fours -go from convex to concave. Also stretch one leg at time behind and raise up if able.

I always tell people with bad lower back to keep pillow under knees while lying on back and between knees if on side so as the upper leg does not pull on back – really helps. Don’t see what’s wrong with swimming (involves all muscles) but lying on front might not help back ?side/breaststroke. Obviously the physio needs to assess you to give correct advice but if you are not having bad spasms the emphasis will be on good posture and strengthening your abdominal and back area and your fitness will probably help the process.

gabapentin help with dose change ….?

have been taking gabapentin 300ml morning 300mg dinner 300mg teatime …have dropped down to 2×300ml a day..due to other meds ….(sciatica probs),….
would i be best taking all 600mg in morn or 300mg morn /dinner …. my main concern is getting through my day at work 10.30 to 18.30 …..pain free …. thank you for any advice or help …

The minimum maintenence dose for gapapentin to control pain is 900 mg. I would be concerned that 600mg may not be enough. But sorry that wasn’t question. Take it twice a day.

Part 2 Update

My Husband has various disabilities but was refused DLA, I don’t understand why?

My hsuband suffers from Degenerative Disc Disease which cause sciatica and he regularly loses feeling in his legs and feet. These problems cause various mobility and day to day living problems, he never leaves the house anymore as he is unable to walk even short distances which is making him extremely depressed, these problems can also make him unable to feed himself, climb stairs or go to the toilet unaided. He recently applied for DLA but was refused on both application and review, I can’t understand why, he is incapable of looking after himself I am having to provide personal care for him but this is getting difficult due to my own health problems. I don’t understand why he is being refused this, can anybody help me?

DDD is not a disease, but part of the normal aging process. As we age the discs between the vertebra dehydrate, thereby shrink. Sciatica is a label for ‘back pain’ but it is not a reason. He needs to return to his GP to find out what is causing the pain, have a MRI see what is going on. If he is loosing ‘feeling’ that is sensory loss, but he will need a nerve conduct study, to prove the nerves are affected. However without proof, neither conditions would be listed as Disabling.

is this pain i’m feeling sciatica?

I’ve been having a really sharp, painful pain about an inch below my left buttock. It hurts so bad at times that I have to stop what I’m doing. I’ve talked to some previous pregnant women and they suggested that it might be that. They didn’t really give me much detail on how serious it is though while you’re pregnant. So, my 2 questions are this.

It certainly sounds like sciatica and it may be caused by the position of the bay laying against a nerve in the uteruise.

Sciatica usually is felt on just one side.

And no it’s not dangerous but painful.

Taking that amount of Tylenol in that time limit is NOT RECOMMENED for a non-pregnant woman. Please don’t take that many aagain in that time frame.

Because you are pregnant the safest thing for you and the baby is to make an appointment with your Doctor ASAP to discuss pain management and treatment options that are safe.

Unfortunatly pregnancy tends to make sciatica worse. So does extra weight gain and standing in certain positions.
